i built this system after 14 years of managing local SEO for home services businesses. plumbers. HVAC companies. lawyers. cleaning companies. i've seen what moves rankings and what wastes time.
these 20 prompts are the ones that actually move the needle. these are the actual prompts you paste into Claude Cowork and get real output from.

once this is loaded, every prompt you run gets sharper. Claude stops answering a stranger's SEO question and starts answering yours.
PART 1: GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE (prompts 1-8)
1. GBP category audit
this is where i start with every single client. because if your categories are wrong, nothing else matters.
your GBP has a primary category and secondary categories. most business owners picked their primary category when they created their listing years ago and never touched it again. meanwhile competitors have added secondary categories they didn't know existed - and those categories directly control which searches trigger your listing in the map pack.
wrong categories = invisible for high-intent searches. it's that simple.
"Open Chrome and go to Google Maps. Search '[service] in [city]' for these 3 keywords: [keyword1], [keyword2], [keyword3]. For each search, note which of my competitors show up in the Map Pack. Then open each competitor's GBP listing and extract their primary category and all secondary categories.
Put everything in a spreadsheet. One tab per keyword. Columns: business name, primary category, secondary categories, star rating, review count, ranking position. Highlight any categories my competitors have that I'm missing from my GBP.
Then give me a prioritized list of categories I should add, ranked by how many top competitors have them. Start with the ones all 3 competitors share - those are non-negotiable. End with the ones only 1 competitor has - those are differentiation opportunities."
why this matters:
i've had clients add one secondary category and start showing up for a whole new set of searches the next week. fastest win in local SEO. but the real power is pattern recognition.
when you map categories against map pack rankings you start seeing things. like every business ranking for "emergency plumber in [city]" also has "water damage restoration" as a secondary category. those patterns are invisible unless you do this analysis. Claude does the gathering. you do the thinking.
2. GBP attributes audit
most people don't even know GBP attributes exist - let alone that they affect rankings and conversions.
attributes are the little tags on your profile. "veteran-owned." "free estimates." "24/7 availability." "accepts credit cards." Google uses these to match searchers with businesses. your competitors have attributes you don't. guaranteed.

Put everything in a spreadsheet. Columns: attribute name, my listing (yes/no), competitor 1 (yes/no), competitor 2 (yes/no), competitor 3 (yes/no).
Highlight every attribute my competitors have that I'm missing. Then create three separate lists:
Attributes ALL top competitors have - these are table stakes, I need them immediately
Attributes 2 out of 3 competitors have - these are strong recommendations
Attributes only 1 competitor has - these are differentiation opportunities
For each missing attribute, tell me the likely ranking impact (high/medium/low) and whether it also affects click-through rate."
why this matters: attributes are a two-for-one play. they help you rank for more specific searches AND they increase click-through rate because those little tags build trust before someone even clicks your listing.
3. competitor review teardown
star rating tells you almost nothing. what actually matters is review velocity - how fast they're getting new reviews compared to you.
a business with 200 reviews that got 180 of them two years ago is weaker than a business with 90 reviews getting 15 a month. Google tracks this. you should too.

why this matters:
that second tab is your entire review strategy for the next 6-12 months. and the keyword phrases from competitor reviews tell you exactly what to ask your happy customers to mention.
"great furnace install in highland park" is doing SEO work for that competitor whether they know it or not.
4. review response strategy
getting reviews is half the battle. how you respond is the other half. Google has confirmed that responding to reviews improves local ranking. your review responses are free real estate for keywords and service mentions.

How negative reviews are handled - do they apologize, offer resolution, get defensive?
Any patterns in language that seem to perform well based on reply engagement
Put this in a spreadsheet comparing my response strategy vs competitors.
Then build me a complete review response template system:
3 variations for 5-star reviews that naturally include [service keyword] + [city keyword]
3 variations for 4-star reviews that acknowledge the slight gap and invite return
3 variations for 3-star reviews that take accountability and offer resolution
3 variations for 1-2 star reviews that are professional, empathetic, and defuse negativity without being defensive
Each template should be 40-80 words. Make them sound like a real person wrote them, not a robot."
why this matters: 10 reviews a month, each response mentioning your service and city -that's 120 pieces of keyword-rich content on your GBP per year that you didn't have before. and the template system means you respond to any review in under 60 seconds.
5. GBP posts strategy
GBP posts are the most underused feature on the platform.
most businesses don't even know they exist. posts show up directly on your listing, expire after 7 days, and posting consistently signals to Google that your business is active. active businesses get preferred placement. your competitors probably aren't posting. that's your advantage right now.

total posts in the last 90 days, post frequency in posts per week on average, post types used (offer/update/event/product), whether posts include images, whether posts include a call to action button, topics and themes covered, any seasonal or promotional patterns, and estimated engagement if visible.
Put this in a spreadsheet. Then build me a complete 8-week GBP posting calendar with 2-3 posts per week using a mix of seasonal service promotions, before-and-after project showcases, neighborhood-specific posts mentioning [area1], [area2], [area3], review highlights, team spotlights, and educational posts about common problems we solve.
Each post must naturally include at least one of these target keywords: [keyword1], [keyword2], [keyword3], should be 100-150 words with a clear CTA, and include an image description so I know exactly what photo to take. Write the full copy for all posts in weeks 1-4 and give me detailed outlines for weeks 5-8."
why this matters: the competitor analysis almost always reveals the same thing: nobody's posting.
consistent posting immediately sets you apart. and neighborhood-specific posts build location relevance that's extremely hard to replicate. every post mentioning a specific area tells Google your business is associated with that neighborhood.
6. services section optimization
Google gives you an entire section to list your services with descriptions. this is prime keyword real estate and almost nobody optimizes it. most businesses leave it blank or add services with no descriptions - that's like having a landing page with just a title and no content.

For each listing, extract the complete services section including every service listed, whether each service has a description, the full text of each description if present, how descriptions are structured (problem-solution, feature-benefit, or keyword-heavy), which services appear in every competitor's listing because those are non-negotiable, and which services appear in some but not all because those are opportunities. Put this in a comparison spreadsheet.
Then audit my current services section against my website at [URL] and identify services on my site that aren't in my GBP, services in my GBP that have no description, and services where my description is weaker than competitors.
Finally, write fully optimized descriptions for all my services - each one should be 2-3 sentences and 40-60 words, naturally include the primary service keyword, mention at least one specific service area from [area1], [area2], or [area3], include a specific benefit or outcome the customer gets, and sound like a real business wrote it not an SEO tool. Here are my core services: [service1], [service2], [service3], [service4], [service5]."
why this matters: your services section is one of the only places on your GBP where you control the text completely. reviews are written by customers.
Q&A can come from anyone. but service descriptions? that's your copy, your keywords, your messaging. the cross-reference against your website catches a common mistake - businesses add new services to their site but forget to update their GBP. if you do "trenchless sewer repair" but it's not on your GBP, you're invisible for that search in the map pack.
7. GBP description optimization
your GBP description is 750 characters of prime real estate. most businesses waste it. they either leave it blank, copy-paste from their website, or stuff it with keywords that sound robotic.

Extract each business's full GBP description and put them in a spreadsheet with these columns: business name, full description text, character count, primary keyword used (yes/no and which one), secondary keywords mentioned, service areas mentioned, years in business or trust signals mentioned, unique selling points mentioned, CTA included (yes/no and what it says), and overall tone (professional/casual/urgent/local).
Then analyze what ALL top-ranking competitors mention because those are non-negotiable elements, what no one mentions that I could own, and what I'm currently saying that nobody else bothers to say. Finally, write me 3 versions of an optimized GBP description each under 750 characters:
Version 1 is keyword-focused with maximum ranking signal where every character is a keyword opportunity; Version 2 is conversion-focused and written to make someone pick up the phone right now; Version 3 is trust-focused and built around years of experience, reviews, and local credibility. All three must include [keyword1], [keyword2], [keyword3] and service areas [area1], [area2], [area3]. Make them sound like a human wrote them at 11pm after a long day, not a marketing team."
why this matters: having 3 versions lets you test. run version 1 for 30 days, check impressions and calls, then try version 2.
most people write one description and forget about it forever. treating it as a testable asset gives you a compounding edge that nobody else in your market is doing.
8. GBP photo audit
businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs. but it's not just about having photos - it's about the right photos uploaded consistently. most businesses uploaded 10 blurry phone pics three years ago and called it done.

For each listing, analyze the photo section completely and record: total photo count, estimated photos uploaded in the last 30 days, estimated photos uploaded in the last 90 days, photo types present (team shots, job site photos, before/after, trucks/vehicles, equipment, office/storefront, completed work close-ups), photo quality (professional vs phone shots), whether any look like stock photos, whether photos include people or faces, whether photos show specific neighborhoods or recognizable local landmarks, and average photos per week based on upload frequency.
Put this in a spreadsheet comparing me vs each competitor. Then build me a specific 8-week photo upload plan with the exact number of photos to upload per week to beat the top competitor's velocity by 50%, a specific shot list for each week including what to photograph and where and why, which weeks to prioritize before/afters vs team shots vs trucks vs completed installs, a naming convention for photos that includes service keywords and location names, and instructions for geotagging photos to specific neighborhoods we serve: [area1], [area2], [area3]. No generic office photos - every photo should be working as a ranking signal."
why this matters: consistency beats volume. uploading 50 photos in one day then nothing for 6 months tells Google you're not active. uploading 3-5 quality photos every week tells Google your business is alive and thriving. the naming convention and geotagging instructions alone are worth the price of admission - most businesses have no idea photo metadata affects local rankings.
PART 2: WEBSITE (prompts 9-13)
9. keyword gap audit
find every keyword your competitors rank for that you don't. this is where the revenue your website should be generating is hiding.
"Open Chrome and log into my SEMrush account at semrush. com. Go to the Keyword Gap tool and enter my domain [yourdomain. com] and these 3 competitor domains: [competitor1. com], [competitor2. com], [competitor3. com].
Filter results to show only keywords where competitors rank in positions 1-20 but I don't rank at all and export this list. From that list, filter down further to only keywords that meet all of these criteria: monthly search volume between 100 and 2,000 which is the local intent sweet spot, keyword contains at least one of these words: [city name], [service type], 'near me', 'emergency', 'best', 'local', and keyword difficulty under 40. For the top 20 keywords from that filtered list, tell me the current search volume, keyword difficulty, which competitors rank for it and at what position, whether I have any existing page that could rank for it with optimization, and whether I need a new page to target it.
Output as a spreadsheet sorted by opportunity score where high volume plus low difficulty plus multiple competitors ranking equals highest priority. Add a final column called 'Action Required' that says either 'Optimize existing page' or 'Create new page' for each keyword."
why this matters: most businesses are invisible for searches their competitors are winning every day. this audit shows you exactly where the revenue gap is and what to do about it. the filtered list removes all the noise and gives you only the keywords worth going after - the ones with real buyer intent and real search volume.
10. money page audit
most local business websites have the wrong pages ranking. or no pages ranking at all. this audit fixes that.
"Open Chrome and go to my Google Search Console at search.google.com/search-console, log in, and access the property for [yourdomain.com].
Go to Search Results, set the date range to last 3 months, and export all queries and pages. For each page on my site, tell me what keywords it currently ranks for, the average position for each keyword, impressions and clicks for each keyword, and whether the page is optimized for the keyword it's ranking for or whether it's ranking accidentally.
Then identify: pages ranking in positions 4-15 for high-value keywords because these need one optimization push to hit top 3, pages with high impressions but low clicks because that's a title and meta description problem, pages with zero rankings because those are either dead weight or untapped opportunity, and keywords I'm ranking for on a page that isn't the right page for that keyword because that's a cannibalization issue.
Then build me a priority action list with quick wins being pages to optimize this week for immediate ranking improvement, medium effort being pages to rebuild over the next month, and long term being new pages to create over the next 90 days. For each item include the current position, target position, estimated time to see improvement, and exact on-page changes needed."
why this matters: most businesses are sitting on page 2 rankings that are one title tag change away from page 1. this audit finds them all and tells you exactly what to fix first - no guesswork, no wasted effort.
11. service + city page builder
the fastest way to rank in multiple cities is a dedicated page per service per city. most businesses have one generic service page and wonder why they don't show up in cities 30 minutes away.
"I need to build location-specific service pages for my website. My primary service is [your main service], the cities I serve are [city1], [city2], [city3], [city4], [city5], my website is [URL], and my target keyword pattern is [service] + [city], [service] near [city], best [service] in [city].
First open Chrome and check my website at [URL] and tell me which city plus service combination pages already exist and which are missing.
Then for each missing combination write a fully optimized page that includes: an SEO title under 60 characters that naturally includes service and city, a meta description under 155 characters that includes service and city and a compelling reason to click, an H1 heading with service and city written naturally, an opening paragraph of 100 words that addresses the specific pain point of someone in that city needing this service right now, a why choose us section of 150 words specific to that city mentioning local landmarks or neighborhoods or area-specific challenges where relevant, a service details section of 200 words covering what the service includes and what the process looks like and what the customer gets, a social proof section with a placeholder for reviews from that city, a FAQ section with 3 questions specific to customers in that city, and a CTA with phone number and 'Call now for same-day service in [city]'.
For each page also give me the exact URL slug, 3 internal linking opportunities from existing pages on my site, and 2 local citations or directories where I should list this specific city plus service combination."
why this matters: Google ranks pages not websites. if you don't have a page specifically about [service] in [city], you will not rank for that search. this prompt builds the entire location page stack in one session - the work that would take a team of writers weeks gets done before lunch.
12. Google Search Console analysis
most business owners log into GSC, get overwhelmed, and close the tab. this prompt makes sense of all of it and finds the revenue hiding on page 2.
"Open Chrome and log into Google Search Console at search.google.com/search-console for my property [yourdomain.com]. Export the last 90 days of search performance data including all queries, all pages, clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position.
Find my page 2 goldmine by identifying every keyword where I rank between position 11 and 20 with at least 100 impressions per month - these are my highest priority optimization targets because a jump from position 15 to position 5 is worth more than creating 10 new pages. For each page 2 keyword, open the page that's ranking for it on my site and tell me whether the keyword is in the title tag, whether it's in the H1, whether it's in the first 100 words of the page, how many words the page is, whether the page has internal links pointing to it, and what the current meta description says.
Then build me a 30-day optimization sprint where week 1 covers title tag and H1 fixes for the top 10 page 2 keywords, week 2 covers content additions for pages that are too thin (under 500 words), week 3 covers internal linking fixes with exactly which pages should link to which pages, and week 4 covers meta description rewrites to fix pages with high impressions but low CTR. For every single fix, write me the exact new copy - don't give me instructions, give me the actual title tag and H1 and meta description I should use."
why this matters: page 2 keywords are the lowest hanging fruit in all of SEO. someone is already searching for exactly what you offer - you're just one optimization push away from being visible. this prompt finds every single one of them and tells you exactly what to write.
13. review sentiment analysis
this is the prompt most agencies don't know exists. it takes your competitor's reviews and reverse-engineers the exact emotional language customers use - then builds that language into your website copy, GBP content, and review request scripts. the result is content that resonates at a gut level because it's written in the words your actual customers use.

I want you to do a deep sentiment analysis across all reviews. Extract: the top 20 emotional words customers use most frequently (e.g. 'relieved', 'impressed', 'finally', 'trustworthy'), the top 10 specific outcomes customers mention (e.g. 'fixed in one visit', 'no mess left behind', 'arrived on time'), the top 5 fears or frustrations mentioned before the service was done (e.g. 'worried it would cost a fortune', 'other companies kept canceling'), the exact phrases customers use when they recommend to others (these are the money phrases for your website), and any language patterns that appear in 5-star reviews but not in 3-star reviews.
Then do the same analysis for my reviews at [my GBP URL]. Compare the sentiment and language between my reviews and my top competitor's reviews and tell me where the emotional gaps are. Finally use all of this data to rewrite: my GBP description using the emotional language real customers use, my homepage headline and subheadline, my review request script so customers naturally use the right words and phrases, and 3 social proof statements I can put on my website that mirror how my best customers talk about my service."
why this matters: most businesses write their own website copy about themselves. the businesses that dominate write their copy in the language their customers actually use. review sentiment analysis finds that language - the exact words that make a stranger trust you enough to call. this is what conversion rate optimisation actually looks like for local businesses.
PART 3: BACKLINKS + AUTHORITY (prompts 14-16)
14. competitor backlink audit
backlinks are trust transfer. you don't need hundreds. you need the right ones. this prompt finds exactly where your competitors are getting their authority from.
"Open Chrome and log into my Ahrefs account at ahrefs.com. Go to Site Explorer and enter [competitor1.com] first. Export their full backlink profile filtered to dofollow links only, DR of linking domain 20 or higher, traffic of linking domain 100 or more monthly visits, and link type not sitewide so no footer or sidebar links. Repeat this for [competitor2.com] and [competitor3.com].
Then find my link opportunities by identifying domains that link to ALL 3 competitors but not to me because those are highest priority, domains that link to 2 competitors but not to me because those are medium priority, and domains that link to 1 competitor but not to me because those are worth reviewing.
For each high-priority link opportunity tell me the domain name and URL, the DR of the domain, what type of site it is (directory/news/blog/association/sponsor), how my competitor earned the link (guest post/sponsorship/citation/PR mention), my realistic chance of getting a similar link (high/medium/low), and the exact outreach strategy I should use.
Then build me a prioritized 90-day link building plan where month 1 covers the 5 easiest links to get such as directories and citations and local associations, month 2 covers 5 medium-effort links such as local news and sponsor opportunities and guest posts, and month 3 covers the 5 authority links worth pursuing such as industry publications and local government and universities. For every single link include the contact method and write me the full outreach email I can send immediately."
why this matters: 2-4 real contextual links per month compounds faster than 20 random directory submissions. this audit removes all the guesswork - you know exactly who to target, exactly how they earned the link, and exactly what to say when you reach out.
15. local citation audit
citations are how Google verifies your business is real. inconsistent NAP data across directories is one of the most common local SEO killers and most businesses have no idea how many wrong citations are actively working against them.

Google Business Profile, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Houzz, Yellow Pages, Manta, Foursquare, Superpages, Citysearch, and any industry-specific directories for [your industry]. For each platform record whether my listing exists, the business name as listed (exact), the address as listed (exact), the phone number as listed (exact), the website URL as listed, whether there are duplicate listings, and the star rating and review count if applicable.
Create a spreadsheet with all findings and flag every inconsistency in red. Then give me a priority fix list showing which inconsistencies are most damaging to local rankings, step-by-step instructions for correcting each one, a list of high-value directories where I have no listing at all and should create one immediately, and a monthly citation maintenance checklist so this problem never comes back."
why this matters: Google cross-references your business information across hundreds of sources. if your phone number is listed differently on Yelp than on Google, it creates a trust signal conflict that suppresses your rankings. fixing citations is one of the few SEO tasks where you can see real ranking improvements within 30 days of making the changes.
16. local search intent mapping
most businesses optimise for the wrong keywords. they chase high-volume awareness terms and ignore the low-volume, high-intent searches that actually generate calls. this prompt maps your entire keyword universe to the buyer journey stage and tells you exactly which ones to prioritise.
"I want to map my target keywords to the buyer journey so I know which ones to prioritise for immediate revenue vs long-term traffic. My business is [business type] in [city] and my core services are [service1], [service2], [service3]. Open Chrome and log into SEMrush at semrush.com.
Pull all keywords in my niche for my service area with a search volume of 20 or more per month. Then categorise every keyword into one of four stages: Stage 1 is problem-unaware where someone has a problem but doesn't know what it's called yet (e.g. 'water coming through ceiling' or 'AC making weird noise'), Stage 2 is problem-aware where they know the problem but are researching solutions (e.g. 'how to fix a leaking roof' or 'why is my AC not cooling'), Stage 3 is solution-aware where they're comparing options and providers (e.g. 'plumber vs DIY pipe repair' or 'how to choose an HVAC company'), and Stage 4 is ready to hire where they want to book someone now (e.g. 'emergency plumber [city]' or 'HVAC repair near me').
For each stage tell me: the total number of keywords, the combined monthly search volume, the average keyword difficulty, and the top 10 keywords by search volume. Then build me a content and SEO strategy for each stage: Stage 4 keywords go on service pages and GBP because that's where the money is, Stage 3 keywords go on comparison and FAQ pages, Stage 2 keywords go on educational blog content that funnels to service pages, and Stage 1 keywords go on problem-identification content that builds early trust. Finally tell me which 5 keywords from Stage 4 I should rank for within the next 90 days and exactly what I need to do to rank for each one."
why this matters: most businesses spend all their SEO budget on Stage 2 keywords that generate traffic but not calls. Prioritize problem-awareness content first because it does the most work for local businesses by answering objections before the phone call."
why this matters: content that ranks for problem-awareness searches turns your website into a 24/7 sales tool. someone searching 'why is my furnace making noise' is one step away from calling a HVAC company.
if your page answers that question and links to your service page, you get the call. your competitor who doesn't have that page doesn't.
18. entity optimisation
this is the most advanced prompt in this entire article. most local SEOs don't even know this is a lever. Google doesn't just rank websites - it ranks entities. your business needs to exist as a verified entity in Google's knowledge graph to unlock the highest level of local trust signals. this prompt builds that entity.
"I want to build and strengthen my business entity in Google's knowledge graph to improve local rankings and potentially trigger a knowledge panel. My business details are: Name: [exact business name], Address: [full address], Phone: [phone number], Website: [URL], GBP: [GBP URL], Founded: [year], Owner name: [your name], Industry: [industry].
Open Chrome and do the following research and build-out. First check if my business has a Google Knowledge Panel by searching '[business name] [city]' and '[owner name] [business name]' and tell me what appears. Then check if my business exists on Wikidata by searching wikidata.org for my business name and report what you find. Then audit my schema markup by going to search.google.com/test/rich-results and entering my website URL and telling me what schema is currently implemented and what's missing. Then check my brand consistency by searching my business name in quotes across Google and noting every place my business information appears and whether the name, address, and phone are consistent.
Then build me a complete entity optimisation plan that includes: the exact LocalBusiness schema markup code I need to add to my homepage (write the complete JSON-LD code ready to paste), a list of authoritative sites where I need to create or claim a presence to build entity signals (include Wikipedia if eligible, Crunchbase, LinkedIn company page, industry associations), the exact anchor text and brand mentions I need to build across the web to strengthen my entity, and instructions for how to get my knowledge panel to appear if it doesn't already exist. This is the SEO work that compounds for years and almost no local business is doing it."

19. competitor GBP posting pattern analysis
everyone knows posting on GBP matters. nobody knows when to post, what format performs, or which topics actually drive map pack visibility. this prompt reverse-engineers everything your top competitors have figured out about GBP posting - the timing, the format, the seasonal patterns - and builds you a posting strategy that works from day one instead of month six.

From Google Analytics if available I need: organic traffic sessions, organic traffic conversion rate, top organic landing pages by sessions, and bounce rate on top pages.
Then build me a one-page monthly SEO report with 3 wins from this month, 3 problems that need addressing, the single most important action for next month, and a note on whether calls from GBP went up or down. I want this in a format I can read in 5 minutes and share with anyone on my team."
